July 2014: 17th Steering Committee Meeting of the International Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT), Colombo, Sri Lanka

The 16th Steering Committee Meeting of the International Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT) was held from 8th to 10th July 2012, in Kochi, Kerala, India. The next venue will be held in Sri Lanka in July 2014. The SC meeting is organized every two years, just before or after the COCOTECH meeting of APCC (Asian and Pacific Coconut Community). Piggy-backing the two meetings in the same location has many advantages:

All COGENT country members are invited to participate the meeting, by sending their official or alternative representatives, or any other delegate mandated by the above.
All stakeholders involved in coconut value chain are invited to apply for participating the meeting. In 2012, all the stakeholders who applied were welcome and participated to the meeting: 3 representatives of private companies located in India and Brazil, a professor from a Brazilian University, and representatives from APCC, SPC and the Copra Board of India.
All donors agency involved in funding coconut research will be invited to participate the meeting. In 2012, a representative from the Global Crop Diversity Trust attended the meeting. In the future, donor agencies will be invited in a more systematic and proactive way.
