COGENT Consultation on coconut cryopreservation and embryo culture/exchange, December 2009, Suwon, Korea: Workshop statement
The representatives of International Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT) member countries, coconut field genebank representatives, Bioversity International scientists, and experts on cryopreservation met in Suwon, Republic of Korea from November 30, 2009 to December 2, 2009. The objectives were to assess the current state of the cryopreservation technique for coconut genetic resources, identify the research gaps for optimization, and develop a roadmap towards the safety duplication of the virtual collection in a cryo-bank. This was reviewed together with the other components of the long term Global Coconut Conservation Strategy. In addition, the experiences to date in using embryo culture to transfer and conserve coconut germplasm, and somatic embryogenesis for mass propagation were also reviewed.
